Raleigh Ranks Among Worst US Cities for Mosquitoes

If you moved to the Raleigh area from some other part of the country, you may think the mosquitos seem worse here. You’re right.

Raleigh ranks No. 6 on a list of the 20 worst cities for mosquito activity in the US. The ranking is put together each year by Orkin based on numbers of customers serviced. The list includes nine cities in the southeast, with Atlanta catching the top spot.

Mosquitos love warm, humid places, and the North Carolina certainly qualifies. Mosquitos are most active during the summer months, as you might guess. But with our warmer temperatures in Raleigh and Cary, mosquito season here lasts from April through October.

There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes in the world, though the US is home to only 175 or so — still enough to cause harm. In some areas of the country, local governments will spray for mosquitos on a regular basis throughout the warmer months. As far as we know, Triangle governments do not provide this service. That’s why it’s important to protect your family from the dangers mosquitoes can pose, from West Nile and Zika to Dengue Fever and Chikungunya.

Mosquitos are attracted by heat, gases, and smells. When you are outdoors, avoid wearing perfumes or using scented soaps or lotions. You can also protect yourself by wearing loose clothing that covers your skin. (Mosquitos can bite through tight clothing.) They’re most active at dusk and dawn. Finally, trim back thick vegetation around the house; mosquitos are not strong fliers, so they hide in places where they are blocked from the wind.
